Reprieve for illegal buildings

Authorities’ attempt to demolish illegal buildings has not got off to a good start owing to technical reasons.

The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has long planned to bulldoze 20 illegal houses. It had demolished three buildings on July 21.

KMC, however, hasn’t informed the house owners about its plan. KMC is bound to inform house owners about its decision and ask them to pulverise their buildings by themselves. If the notice goes unheard, a special KMC team demolishes the buildings.

“We issue a 35-day notice before going for the demolition,” said Dhana Pati Sapkota, an official at the KMC.

As an effort to make Kathmandu city beautiful, as mentioned in its Kathmandu Declaration, KMC aims to break down buildings constructed in violation of the code, Sapkota said.

He said most of the illegal buildings stand at New Baneshwor, Bouddha and Jorpati areas.
