NRN Global Conference kicks off Wednesday

Fifth Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) Global Conference will kick off wednesday, with prominent candidates such as Jiba Lamichhane and Deb Man Hirachan eyeing top posts of NRN Association for the next tenure.

Bhawan Bhatta from Japan has also announced his candidacy for the post of treasurer. The conference will elect office bearers including president for a two-year term.

Presenting his candidacy, Lamichhane committed to taking NRN Association to greater heights. “I will work seriously to bring foreign direct investment to Nepal,” he told Republica. “I will focus on hydropower sector while seeking foreign investments.”

He also indicated that despite differences in agenda and vision, an alliance with Hirachan is not ruled out.

Hirachan said he will take initiatives to set up embassies in Nepal of countries where 2,500 or more Nepalis are living and working. In his agenda, Hirachan promised to make the organization inclusive by uniting NRNs residing in various parts of the world and prioritize transparency within the organization.

“The needs of NRNs are different, depending on the region they live in. “I will make efforts to identify such needs and prepare a draft to address them,” he said.

The conference will focus on issues like ensuring participation of women and second generation NRNs, role of NRNs in disaster preparedness, and measures to be taken to make foreign employment dignified, among others.

The conference will also hold discussions on issues including opportunities and challenges for NRNs to bring fresh investments into Nepal and revision of laws concerning NRNs.
